The (Un)limited Design Contest functions as an experiment in Open Design – the sharing of creative work in the same manner as open source software.
Open Design is sharing your designs with others. It allows you to use the designs made by others, copy these and even adapt the designs on the conditions that you attribute your work, will not use it commercially and will use the same license yourself. This is possible by using a free Creative Commons license.
Unlimited Design
Say, you want to re-use an existing design. Using the Open Designs at unlimiteddesigncontest.org, you can! You an use the digital blueprint and produce your work at one of the Fablabs in The Netherlands. The website provides a manual for each design how it can be produced.

A Fablab uses a standard set of machines, that run on open source software when possible. This ensures the easy sharing of designs, products and knowledge between the Fablabs around the world. Anyone that uses a Fablab, is obliged to honour the Fablab charter, that contains the Fablab objectives.
By using a Creative Commons license Attribution-Non-Commercial-ShareAlike you are able to share your Open Design with others, without losing your copyright.
Creative Commons provide free licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work with the freedom the creator wants it to carry, so others can share, remix, use commercially, or any combination thereof.
